Safety With Essential Oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated liquids that can be harmful if not used with the utmost care. These rules are not a complete safety reference and should be used in conjunction with guidance from your doctor or qualified aromatherapy practitioner.

1. Never use essential oils undiluted on the skin.

The use of lavender and tea tree can be the exception in this case but should be administered under guidance from a qualified aromatherapist. Oils are normally applied to the skin having been diluted in a suitable carrier oil. Always test new oils for sensitivity prior to a full application.

2. Be aware of certain health conditions.

It is best practice to avoid self administration of essential oils during pregnancy and for those suffering from ashma, epilepsy and other medical conditions. Any treatments in these cases would be better administered by a qualified aromatherapy practitioner.

3. Never take essential oils internally.

Just that. It is very uncommon for a qualified aromatherapist to even recommend this.

4. Storage

Keep essential oils out of reach of children and pets and ensure they are stored in appropriate child-proof containers. Essential oils also have a "use by" date which should not be ignored.

5. Fire risk.

Essential oils are extremely flammable and great care should be taken when using them in the presence of naked flames and fires.
